A battleship shell literally weighs as much as a small car
A very clear demonstration that a battleship shell literally weighs as much as a small car, at the Battleship Wisconsin museum in Norfolk, Virginia. The 16in Mark 7 gun used on the Iowa class battleships was provided with 2 major types of shells: High Capacity Mark 13 [860 kg] and Armor Piercing Mark 8 [1225 kg]. For comparison, the Volkswagen Beetles of the 1960s had a curb weight of 730-860 kg, depending on the specific model.
