USS Enterprise
Probably the most mislabeled photo in circulation today, the famous picture of a bomb striking the deck of USS Enterprise.
Just about everyone claims that the photographer who took this photo was killed in the explosion.
However, this image actually comes from a film taken aboard the ship during the battle. It captures the third and final bomb to strike Enterprise during the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. The camera operator, Marion Riley, survived the blast with only minor injuries.
The person said to be the victim, Photographer Robert F. Read, was killed by the second bomb to strike Enterprise. The wreckage and smoke caused by the second bomb can be seen at the aft end of the flight deck in this film.
